Mayor Bloomberg has been increasingly vocal about amending gun laws ever since Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot by a man who should not have been able to pass a background check. His Mayors Against Illegal Guns group started a petition on Fix Gun Checks, calling for Congress to require a background check for every gun purchase in America, and now they're taking their show on the road. Bloomberg said at the launch, "It is time for Washington to listen to the 250,000 Americans that have signed our petition and take action: since the Tucson shooting more than 1,300 people have been killed with guns in the United States and that number continues to grow."
The truck will tour the country for two months in an attempt to make people aware of the dangers of illegal guns, and "will include events with mayors, law enforcement officials, gun violence victims, and faith leaders who will all come together to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people." Bloomberg also explained his motivation on Good Morning America, and spoke about going undercover at a gun show. He said, "99% of gun dealers are honest. It's the 1% that are putting guns in the hands of kids and criminals...they're the ones that go out and kill us."
