As the Wilpons' Madoff trouble continues, an (sort of) unlikely suitor for the Mets has announced himself: The Donald is interested. Hot off announcing his plans to reopen the Tavern on the Green (even though he doesn't have any authority to) good old Donald Trump has let word out that he is arranging a face-to-face with Fred Wilpon to discuss buying a stake in the club. And even though they haven't actually talked yet, Trump has already told the press about how he wants it.
The Wilpons are only seeking a 25 percent or less investment in the team, but naturally Trump wants a controlling stake. Which let the Times run this wonderful line: "As to why he would not be interested in just a quarter of the team, Trump, referring to himself in the third person, said: 'If you look at Trump’s record, he is only interested in things he can control,' he said."
Though the Trump-Mets idea already has a nine-month-old Facebook page and a YouTube video it may not be a shoe-in. The Donald's connections to the gaming industry in particular may make it very difficult for him to get approved by Major League Baseball (you can't own a casino and a team, which makes sense). And it isn't like he is the only guy with dough sniffing around Citifield.
Meanwhile the Wilpon's dispute with Bernie Madoff trustee Irving Picard, which set off the whole Mets-for-sale meme in the first place, continues apace. Currently Picard and the Wilpon's lawyers are arguing over the latter's "unorthodox" practices while seeking information in the suit against them.
