If you're waiting to pop by the Duane Reade on the way home from work to pick up a $5 heart-shaped box of Russel Stovers for your sweetheart, you might be out of luck. According to ABC7, Valentine's Day spending is on the rise, with Americans expected to spend $1.5 billion on sweets alone. And with that chocolate shortage looming, it's unclear if manufacturers planned for the uptick in sales. Our local grocery store was nearly out of boxed chocolate (and completely out of strawberries!) last night, and at least one Duane Reade is suffering from a Sweetheart shortage.
An employee at the Duane Reade on 14th and 4th Avenue told us, "we have a lot of candy but not what people have been asking for. Like Sweethearts and stuff." But how else are we supposed to inform our beloveds that they R CUTE? In total, Americans are expected to spend $15.7 million this Valentine's day, with the average person spending $115. Last year, it was just $103. However, just remember that the best things in life are free. Like watching tonight's epic Jeopardy competition. And condoms.
