Love was in the beer this morning as Mayor Michael Bloomberg, alongside Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Brooklyn Brewery President Steve Hindy cut the ribbon to commemorate the opening of the Brewery’s $8 million expansion to its Williamsburg location. The expansion will multiply the brewery’s production of local craft beer tenfold, from 12,000 barrels of beer per year to 120,000. It has already created 11 new jobs and will create 15 more full time jobs within the next two years.
Birthday boy Marty Markowitz posited that the extension of the Brewery at the hands of Hindy would “bring the brewskis back to Brooklyn,” and establish the borough as “the land of lager.” Meanwhile, Bloomberg, who was also celebrating his 69th birthday this morning, deemed the growth of the renowned Brewery as “the best birthday gift,” he could imagine.
Although Bloomberg opted out of sampling the Brew Master’s Selection, "Main Engine," that was on tap at the ceremony (the first specialty selection fermented in the new brewhouse), he did mention that he typically "[has] to put ice in [his] beer." And Brewery President Steve Hindy tells us, “It’s nice that the Mayor takes the time to come and do this. When we opened the Brewery originally in '96, Mayor Giuliani came. It helps draw attention to what we’re doing here." You certainly have our undivided attention, you big, beautiful brewery.
