Yesterday, New Yorkers for Marriage Equality, a part Human Rights Campaign, released a video with former President George W. Bush's daughter Barbara announcing her support for gay marriage. Barbara Bush, who lives in Manhattan, says in the video, "I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality. New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love."
Bush, 29, joins other notable figures in the push for NY State to legalize gay marriage—New Yorkers for Marriage Equality support from Julianne Moore, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Robert Kennedy, Jr., and Mayor Bloomberg. This time does appear right for a renewed push, but the real question is whether the Republican-controlled State Senate can muster enough votes.
The NY Times refers to Meghan McCain and Mary Cheney, "Ms. Bush is the latest child of a prominent Republican leader to embrace same-sex marriage, long considered anathema to the conservative movement. Gay rights advocates have been quick to seize on the generational split as evidence that the acceptance of same-sex marriage is blind to party affiliation and family values," and points out how former First Lady Laura Bush once said, "When couples are committed to each other and love each other [they should have] the same sort of rights that everyone has." Also, a gay classmate from Yale tells the Times that Barbara Bush had many openly gay friends, "She was loved by the gay community at Yale."
