Here's a look around the The Mulberry Project, a subterranean cocktail lounge in Nolita spearheaded by Matty Gee, the cocktail craftsman behind The Randolph. Gee, who's also had a hand in Milk & Honey and the Boom Boom Room, quietly opened the bar a couple of weeks ago. It can handle about 60 hungry cocktail fanatics, who are already streaming through the creepy entrance door to sample the Project's "bespoke" cocktail menu. Drinks range in price up to $14, and include options like the Rusty Cage (Bourbon/Rye, Amaro Montenegro, Marascino Luxardo, Bitters), Vodka Fruit Collins (Vodka, Fresh Fruit Selected Daily, Lemon Juice, Soda, Bitters), and French 149 (St. Germain, Gin, Prosecco, Fresh Fruit of the Day).
Chef Michael “Kiwi” Camplin (Boqueria) has has been brought on to serve a menu of small plates and entrees like Crispy Pork Belly (Apple Chip, Caramel Fig Compote, Cider Reduction), Bloody Mary Oyster Shooters, and Crispy Baby Artichokes (Hazelnut Romansco Sauce, Grilled Scallions). As for the decor, the walls are festooned with street art, and behind the bar there's a bright crimson mural created by veteran artist Curtis Kulig (aka "Love Me" at The Ace Hotel). We're also told the DJ booth is "state of the art," and the more you drink the better it sounds.
149 Mulberry Street between Grand and Hester Streets // (646) 448-4536 // Open Sunday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m., dinner served nightly from until 2 a.m.
