After an exciting morning for State Democrats, our newly minted Governor took to a podium in front of thousands to deliver his State of the State address. And where is our state? At a crossroads, according to Cuomo's 87 power point slides.
Over the course of his speech Cuomo emphasized that there needs to be a "fundamental realignment of this state" and brought up points ranging from his desire for a year-long salary freeze for public employees, to limits on school property taxes, to a generally steadier tax rate:
When property taxes are measured as a percentage of home values, 13 of the top 16 highest taxed counties were in New York. New York has no future as the tax capital of the nation and our people cannot afford to pay more taxes. That is why we need a property tax to give taxpayers relief... Our young people will not stay, businesses will not come, this has to change. Put it simply, the people of this state simply cannot afford to pay more taxes, period.
Other issues brought up included an effort to reduce the number of state agencies by 20 percent (first up? Merging the Insurance Department, the Banking Department and the Consumer Protection Board) and overhauling the state's juvenile justice system.
And that's really just the tip of a very long iceberg. You can watch and/or read the whole thing right here.
