[UPDATE BELOW] A fire tore through the lower floors of a six-story apartment building on the corner of Second Avenue and East 4th Street just before 4 a.m. this morning. All the occupants were evacuated with only one minor injury, and NY1 reports that the fire was under control around 5:15 a.m. The ground floor of the building has been occupied by a deli, the East Village Grocery Farm Store, for at least two decades; one passerby this morning tells us, "There was hardly any ash or water. Even more bizarre: at 8:15 there was NO ONE around. No firefighters, no cops, no store owners or tenants (see second floor apartment) or officials of any kind." Here's video of the smoky scene from Grezakster:
EV Grieve reports that there was a second fire in the neighborhood just hours later, at 507 East Sixth Street, just east of Avenue A. Witnesses say the fire destroyed the 6th Street Kitchen, a small plates restaurant. We're waiting to hear back from the FDNY on the extent of the damage and injuries.
Update 10:10 a.m.: An FDNY spokesman tells us, "One firefighter with minor injuries went to Bellevue from the fire at 503 East 6th Street. There were seven minor civilian injuries for the fire at 69 2nd Avenue, six of which went to Beth Israel and one refusing medical attention." The causes of both fires are under investigation.
