[UPDATE BELOW] So the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act may actually happen! Last night New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer reportedly worked until after midnight hammering out details and the vote could go down as early as this afternoon. Fingers crossed. The only problem? The bill ain't quite what it used to be.

The final language is still being hammered out, but the bill appears to have been cut down even more than previously reported. The original $7.4 billion price tag attached to the act was last seen hovering around $6 billion and now has been cut back further to $4.3 billion. Other concessions to the GOP reportedly include "provisions to study health information technology, and whether such health care should be provided through Veterans Affairs hospitals." It will still provide five years of health care coverage to workers and re-open the compensation program for those who have become ill from toxic dust (though you won't be able to double dip).

Considering all of the flack that Republicans have been getting of late over the bill we've got a hunch this cheaper version should make it through before the 111th Congress calls it a day.

Update: And the bill went through the Senate with unanimous support. Next up, a vote in the House (where it is expected to breeze through) and then on to the President.
