The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation has officially given the go ahead to St. Ann's Warehouse to develop the Brooklyn Tobacco Warehouse as its future performance space. (The move is spurred by the development of St. Ann's current location across the street into a huge 17-story development.) Of course, the historic 19th Century building is no stranger to the theater or St. Ann's, which brought a highly stylized production of Macbeth to the space in 2008.

Proposed renderings for the Tobacco Warehouse were presented on Monday evening and approved on Wednesday by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation’s board. The only real opposition came from the community, many of whom felt that they had not had adequate input into the design.

St. Ann's faced little competition from other proposals (like this one), and the Post reports that the only other group in the running didn't even show up to the board meeting, because it believed the decision to select St. Ann’s was already a done deal. Other critics said the entire contract-selection process lacked transparency. St. Ann's $15 million plans envision two performance spaces: a 300-700-person theater as well as a smaller 125-person space. In addition to the theaters, the 7,600-square-foot triangular section of the Tobacco Warehouse will be left open-air, and will house a public garden and cafe area. St. Ann's expects to relocate sometime in 2013.
