At a press conference on the steps of Borough Hall earlier this afternoon, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz was joined by restaurateur Danny Meyer to officially confirm the hotly rumored sixth Shake Shack, now set to open next year at the intersection of Fulton, Willoughby, and Adams Streets in downtown Brooklyn, around the corner from Borough Hall and at the foot of the Fulton Mall. The burger chain will create about 70 jobs, and is part of a push by Markowitz to lure high-end retailers to the Fulton Mall, including H&M, Sephora, and Aeropostale.

"We couldn't be happier to welcome the gold standard for burgers, hot dogs, and frozen custard to The People's Republic of Brooklyn." said Markowitz. "Congratulations for beefing up the Fulton Mall. Brooklyn is sizzling over Shake Shack." Meyer, whose restaurant empire includes Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, and Eleven Madison Park, then spoke of his love for Brooklyn and its restaurants. "We've been wanting to come to Brooklyn for a long time, but we haven't found the right space until now," he said. "There are at least 25 restaurants that I'm in love with in Brooklyn where our alumni now work. This is the first time we've gotten to come here on our own."

The chain's imminent arrival in Brooklyn hasn't gone over without its share of opposition, however. Tony's Pizza has occupied the prime corner for 20 years, and owner Sal Casaccio isn't happy about being booted, even though they'll be moving up the street next week. "We got caught in the flood of landlords trying to bring in so-called big business; I can't believe they're taking this building from us," he told the Brooklyn Paper. "This location was like dating Pam Anderson. How can you replace Pam Anderson?"
