[UPDATE BELOW]

A man with a history of luring gay men with the intent to rob and assault them is charged with a hate crime after attacking a customer at NYC's oldest gay bar, according to the Anti-Violence Project. Suspect Frederick Giunta, 45, allegedly entered Julius in the West Village around 5:40 p.m. on October 11th and became infuriated when a bartender refused to serve him because he was already too intoxicated. He then unloaded on a customer, allegedly punching him while yelling anti-gay slurs.

Manhattan DA Cy Vance's Hate Crimes Unit is investigating the incident, and believes this seemingly unprovoked assault was Giunta's second of the night; ten minutes earlier he allegedly attacked a man at Ty’s Bar on Christopher Street, punching him in face and grabbing his wallet, the Post Reports. (The Daily News has Giunta's age as 25 and reports that he punched a bartender, not a customer.) Giunta is charged with attempted robbery and assault as a hate crime, and is being held in jail on $25,000 bail. The incident comes just weeks after an alleged hate crime at iconic gay pub The Stonewall Inn. "It is unacceptable that perpetrators of anti-LGBTQ violence feel emboldened to come into any neighborhood, including gay-friendly neighborhoods, and attack LGBTQ people because of who we are,” says Sharon Stapel of the Anti-Violence Project [pdf].

UPDATE:Runnin' Scared notes that Giunta was on supervised parole after pleading guilty earlier this year to felony grand larceny and a misdemeanor count of petit larceny.
