Brett Favre's return to East Rutherford went to the Jets' satisfaction. He played a listless first half and threw a game-deciding interception in the second half as the Jets beat the Vikings, 29-20, on Monday night. Lightning delayed this game for about 40 minutes, and the Jets used four field goals to take a 9-0 lead at halftime thanks in part to two Favre fumbles.
They extended that to 12-0 before Favre found Randy Moss for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. After another Nick Folk field goal, the Vikings almost tied the game but missed the two-point conversion after another Favre touchdown pass, this one to Percy Harvin. The Jets responded with a 23-yard run by Shonn Greene and finally iced the game when Dwight Lowery returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown. After all that has gone on since the Jets acquired Favre before the 2008 season, they can say they had the last laugh.
Two late power-play goals helped the Islanders rally past the Rangers in a 6-4 victory on Columbus Day. P.A. Parenteau tied it and Blake Comeau scored the go-ahead goal before the Islanders added an empty-netter to take the back-and-forth game. Late penalties by Ryan Callahan and Marc Staal gave the Islanders the 5-on-3 advantage. The Rangers also led 3-2 at one point. Brandon Dubinsky, Michael Del Zotto, Dan Girardi, and Artem Anisimov had the Rangers goals. Cormeau scored twice and was joined by Josh Bailey, Matt Moulson and Frans Nielsen (empty-netter) as Islanders who lit the lamp.
The Devils are now 0-2-1 after a 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh. This is the worst their worst start since 2001-02. New Jersey couldn't have had high expectations for this game; they only had 15 skaters due to injuries. They wouldn't use that as an excuse, but it would be a valid one.
