Early Sunday morning, Manuel Tzajguachiac was killed in a hit-and-run in Bensonhurst, and police tracked the BMW SUV to an off-duty firefighter who "turned himself in" at the 62nd precinct hours after the accident. Pat Quagliariello wouldn't tell police whether or not he was driving, only that he owned the vehicle, which was found a block away from his Midwood home with damage to the left front fender.
In surveillance footage NY1 claims to have obtained (it's not showing up on the website), the X3 SUV is seeing hitting the victim and speeding off just after midnight on Sunday. Quagliariello, younger brother of NYPD detective Anthony Quagliareillo, arrived at the precinct at 4:15 a.m. and was questioned, but was not given a Breathalyzer test or a blood test. Sources say they could not have administered the tests legally because there were no witnesses claiming Quagliariello was behind the wheel.
Tzajguachiac, a Guatemalan immigrant, moved to New York six months ago to earn money for his family back home. His widow simply said, "I loved him," while friend Umberto Sinche condemned the driver. "He just hit him and left him behind like he was an animal," said Sinche.
