The man accused of stabbing an 8-year-old boy in the back at the Dave & Buster's in Westbury, Long Island has pleaded not guilty to charges including attempted murder. However, prosecutors say that Evan Sachs, 23, was carrying a note explaining his attack—Assistant DA Daniel Looney told the Post, "The note states what his intentions were that evening -- to harm somebody."
On Friday night, the young victim had been playing video games at the arcade-themed restaurant when Sachs allegedly grabbed his left shoulder stabbed him in the back five times with a 3 1/2 inch Remington knife. Nassau County Det. Lt. Kevin Smith said, "The boy staggers away from this man back towards his mother and says that someone just hit or tapped him on the back and then he collapses." A witness pointed out Sachs as the stabber and the witness and the boy's father held Sachs until police arrived.
Sachs, an usher at the UA Theatres in Famingdale, was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a dangerous weapon. His lawyer said his client has been under psychiatric care and is on five medications, "We're very grateful that the young boy who was hurt is stable. [Sachs' family is] devastated by what happened" and concerned about the boy's condition. Sachs' mother told Newsday, "My son is not a bad person." Sachs is being held without bail and is under suicide watch.
