The NJ Nets had some lousy luck during the superstar sweepstakes earlier this summer, but good news comes to those who are patient. After rumors started heating up last month, several NBA sources are now saying that the Nets are on the verge of a four-team trade for superstar Carmelo Anthony, according to the Post.
In the deal, which has not been confirmed yet, the Nets would get Anthony from the Denver Nuggets and possibly point guard D.J. Augustin from the Charlotte Bobcats; they'd lose first-round pick Derrick Favors, star point guard Devin Harris and at least one future first rounder. The Utah Jazz would be the fourth team involved with the incredibly complicated trade. The deal has been formulating all week, but is contingent on Anthony agreeing to a 3-year, $65 million contract extension before it can occur.
According to the Daily News, Anthony won't veto the deal, which means it could be completed before the end of the weekend. It also means that the Nets-Knicks rivalry will be relevant for the first time in over a decade. The Knicks were allegedly Anthony's first preferred choice, but lacked any trade assets; you can all blame Donnie Walsh and the Tracy McGrady trade for that. Of course, let's not forget that the deal ain't done 'til Anthony has his photo op with owner Mikhail Prokhorov.
