Yesterday, Braylon Edwards appeared in court to be arraigned on charges of driving while intoxicated and driving while impaired. The Jets' wide receiver, who was arrested around 5:15 a.m. yesterday morning at 12th Avenue and West 34th Street (hours after teammate Jerricho Cotchery's fundraiser at Hudson Terrace), told reporters as he left the Criminal Court building, "There will be plenty of time to talk. I'll address everybody." Maybe he'll mention why he allegedly wanted the cops to let him go when they pulled him over?
The cops had stopped the 27-year-old because his 2007 Range Rover had overly tinted windows but then they smelled alcohol. The Post reports that Edwards allegedly admitted he'd been drinking and said, "We were coming from a party. How about I just leave the car and take a cab and go home? ... "Why was I stopped for having tints if my driving didn't lead you to believe I was drunk?" Edwards also allegedly asked why he wasn't given a field sobriety test, but he went to the local precinct: "Sources said he blew 0.156 during a Breathalyzer test at the scene and .164 later on a machine at Manhattan's Seventh Precinct station house. The state's legal limit is 0.08."
Edwards had told cops his last drink was about an hour before being pulled over. According to the Post, after Cotchery's fundraiser, Edwards and teammates D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Vernon Ghoulston went to the clubs—while at the Griffin, one person in their entourage said, "Can you make this [drink] a little stronger? It's for a professional football player." But a bartender responded, "Sorry, honey, I make all the drinks the same way."
In the meantime, the Jets say that Edwards will play, but not start, at their next game with Miami. Apparently deactivating him would be a violation of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement; the Daily News says, "It will be up to Rex Ryan when he enters the game. All punishments for substance abuse policy violations are handed down by the league, and if the Jets dress Edwards and don't let him play, the Jets could face a challenge by the NFL Players Association."
Edwards could be headed for some serious punishment in Cleveland, because this arrest may violated his probation related to his guilty plea for assaulting a friend of LeBron James' outside a Cleveland nightclub last fall. His teammates are pissed; one said, "He's got to know better than this. There is a program in place for this. Every player knows about the program. We just talked about it as a team last week, so there is no excuse for something like this to happen."
