After winning the lease to Tavern on the Green in Central Park, the restaurant's would-be owner walked away the project when a dispute with the union proved irreconcilable. The restaurant, located in a former sheepfold, has been empty since January, when the previous owner was forced out by the Bloomberg administration at the end of last year. It's no great loss considering the mediocre, overpriced food, but it is a waste of a beautiful space. So as the city considers new proposals, it's bringing in a variety of food vendors to work Tavern's outdoor terrace, facing the Sheep Meadow.
The Parks Department announced today that Ladle of Love, Pera Mediterranean Brasserie, Rickshaw Dumpling Truck and Van Leeuwen Artistan Ice Cream will operate on the terrace starting October 15th. By now you're no doubt familiar with Rickshaw Dumpling Truck and Van Leeuwen Artistan Ice Cream. Pera is a Turkish and Eastern Mediterranean restaurant in Midtown, and Mount Kisco-based Ladle of Love sounds exciting. According to the press release, it will serve "a variety of seasonal homemade soups and stews with offerings like harvest celebration and beef bourguignon, fresh salads, sandwiches such as the Thanksgiving and a BBQ pulled pork, their much beloved fried truffled chickpeas and Ladle of Love stuffed brownies." Yum!
