A teenage boy from Connecticut visiting his dad in the Bronx was killed early this morning in a drive-by shooting, and police believe it was a case of mistaken identity. Tashawn Bromfield was sitting on his dad's stoop in Eastchester Heights around 12:40 a.m. with a friend and drinking a Slurpee when shots rang from a four-door sedan driving by. Bromfield was hit in the chest. His father's girlfriend told the Daily News, "He was on the ground bleeding everywhere. I was in bed when I heard the shots and then I hear his friend screaming 'Tashawn's been shot!' We ran, out but it was too late."

Police know of no motive for the murder, and are investigating surveillance footage to see whether Bromfield may have been mistaken for a target of a gang shooting. His friend's mother said, "He [Tashawn] came to visit and I let my son stay out because he was such a good kid. I told them they could hang out in the courtyard for a little while." Bromfield was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.

Bromfield was one of seven people shot last night in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, though he was the only fatality. Twenty minutes after he was shot, three were shot on Hull Avenue, and three others were shot in the area between 12:35 a.m. and 2 a.m. Bromfield's mother wrote on Facebook, "my youngest kid and only son has been called home at 16 years old, please keep me in ur prayers fb fam."
