As if the Mets needed more problems: The team's closer, Francisco Rodriguez, aka "K-Rod," was arrested after last night's loss to the Colorado Rockies at CitiField. He allegedly assaulted his father-in-law in the tunnel outside the clubhouse right after the game. K-Rod, 28, was charged with third-degree assault and is reportedly still in a holding facility at CitiField!
It's unclear what prompted the confrontation between the pitcher and his 53-year-old father-in-law, but Rodriguez was pretty testy with reporters after the loss. The Daily News reports, "'Did I f-----g pitch tonight?' Rodriguez snarled when asked if he was upset that manager Jerry Manuel did not ask him to protect a one-run lead. 'Why do I have to talk to you f-----g guys?'" The News also says that police think Rodriguez threw at least one punch and that the fight had started in the Family Lounge.
K-Rod tried to leave CitiField, but was summoned back to the stadium where he was arrested. The Post has a photograph of him trying to leave in his Lamborghini (well, what would you drive if you had a three-year, $39 million deal?). He will be arraigned in Queens criminal court today. His father-in-law had scratches and a bump on his head—he was loaded up on a stretcher and taken to a hospital.
The Mets only said," There was an incident at the ballpark between Francisco Rodriguez and his family. He was questioned by police. All other questions should be directed to the police." The NY Times reports, "The arrest could hasten Rodriguez’s exit from the Mets. He was involved in a shoving match with the bullpen coach Randy Niemann earlier this season, and his volatility had made the Mets wary of their long-term commitment to him. Rodriguez has a $17.5 million option on his contract for 2012, and the Mets owner Fred Wilpon has shown a willingness to sever ties with players who have gotten into trouble."
