The economy and job market may be sluggish, but the hotel business is booming, and to capitalize on record-high tourism in NYC, there are 46 new hotels rushing to open this year—more than any other city in America, according to the Times. Last week we took a tour of one of these, the 18-story "Gansevoort Park Ave NYC" on the corner of Park Avenue and 29th Street. It's pretty swish, and it better be, because after next week's soft-opening introductory rate of $275 a night, it will bump up to $400 by September. But of course you don't have to get a room to throw money around here.
Besides a forthcoming 10,000 square foot Italian restaurant ("Ristorante Asellina"), the hotel boasts a three-level roof divided up into six lounges, called the "Plunge Rooftop Bar + Lounge." Fireplaces and great views abound, but unfortunately the pool area is restricted to hotel guests. About one third of the pool is indoors, with the other two thirds separated during the winter by a divider, which guests can swim under to get outside and splash around in a heated pool high above Manhattan in the middle of February, their Champagne laughter tinkling down to the snowy street as you trudge shivering to the 6 train. Whatever, they're not really happy, not deep down.
When the hotel is entirety completed in the fall, there will, of course, be a spa, a fitness centre, a multi-purpose ballroom, and a Cutler Salon. And should you require a suite, rates start at $925 a night. However, in a nod to egalitarianism, all guests will have access to a Porsche Panamera 4S and driver to chauffeur them around town.
