Around 2:30 a.m. this morning, a shooting broke out at 144th Street and Lenox Avenue, leaving one man dead and two civilians and two police officers injured. The Daily News reports, "Witnesses said the incident unfolded after cops tried to disperse 500 people attending a barbecue held in memory of a recent slaying victim." Apparently two men got into a fight; what happened next is still under investigation.
One of the men, 22-year-old Luis Soto, was killed. According to WCBS, police are still trying to understand what happened but "Witnesses who were with Soto at the time said he was handcuffed and unarmed when he was shot." Soto's stepfather also said, "They haven’t gave me no information, I just know what all the witnesses that I spoke to out here told me. Told me that my son got shot by police."
An NYPD spokesperson told the AP, "I still have people at the scene and don't have a working story yet. It's unknown whether they're (the civilians) suspects or victims of a previous shooting or whatever." The News also says it was unclear if the police officers fired their guns, but a detective said it seemed like "all kinds of people shooting at each other."
The two civilian victims are hospitalized. One cop was shot in the chest (he was wearing a bulletproof vest) while another was treated for a graze wound to the hand.
