The state's GTL addicts may be forced to take out the T depending on how old they are. Since the World Health Organization classified tanning as a human carcinogen, health advocates have been pushing for more regulation on the state's tanning salons. But haven't the pretty ones been punished enough?

Current state law forbids anyone under the age of 14 from using a tanning bed, and requires written parental consent for those between 14 and 18. But pending legislation would ban tanning bed usage for anyone under 18. Peter Slocum, vice president for advocacy at the American Cancer Society in Albany, explained to the AP, "We're not claiming that people get addicted to tanning the same way you do nicotine, but it clearly is a habit you develop as a teenager." The Assembly is also considering a law that would ban smoking in cars if there is a passenger under 14, and one that would prevent minors less than four years apart from receiving harsh penalties for "sexting."

According to the American Cancer Society, individuals who tan indoors before the age of 30 increase their risk for melanoma by 75%. Another study showed that between 1998 and 2008, teen use of tanning beds rose from 1% to 27%. But the Indoor Tanning Association plans to fight the proposed ban on indoor tanning for anyone under 18, saying it would be ridiculous if a parent could consent to their underage child's marriage or joining the military, but not their tanning indoors. Somebody get John McCain on the case!
