For the third year straight, the DOT will create a 6.9 mile, car-free oasis stretching from the Brooklyn Bridge up Lafayette, Fourth Avenue and Park Avenue to Central Park on the first three Saturdays in August. And this year's "Summer Streets" initiative comes turbo-charged: There will be lots more "entertainment" provided by groups including the New York Fringe Festival, AND three of those dumpster pools we all envied last summer when they made their invite-only debut in Brooklyn.

"While they have been lovingly referred to as Dumpster pools, don’t let the name fool you," DOT commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan tells the Times. "These are clean, compliant mobile pools that will put even more ‘park’ into Park Avenue. It will almost be like a Park Avenue boardwalk." The 8 feet wide, 22 feet long and 5 ½ feet deep pools are the work of design company Macro-Sea, which is providing them to the city free of charge. They will be supervised by lifeguards (provided of courtesy Crunch), and the pools will operate with a water filtration system and Department of Health approval.

Pool hours are from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at the end of each Saturday, the pool deck will drop to the sides and the pools will be covered by a heavy-duty mesh, then covered and locked up curbside. But we highly doubt some "mesh" and a little lock will be any match for determined late night skinny dippers.
