The Knicks might not have been able to convince Lebron James to come to NYC (let us not forget the gospel of delusion), even with the huge resources and dollar signs at their disposal, but leave it to a pro organization to show you how it's done: the Yankees are on the verge of completing a trade for ace pitcher Cliff Lee from the Seattle Mariners. And they're so Fonzie about this stuff, they're trying to get the trade completed before tonight's game, when Lee is scheduled to pitch against them!
Update: The Post is now reporting that negotiations between the Mariners and Yankees have broken down at the last second. The deal has seemingly crumbled because the Mariners were nervous about the health of David Adams, one of the three prospects the Yankees were going to send them. Seattle then demanded more from the Yankees. It's unclear yet if the two teams will re-negotiate, or if the deal is completely dead.
According to The LeBron James Network ESPN, the deal is "just about done," and would see the Yankees sending top catching prospect Jesus Montero, along with one or two other rookies, to Seattle for Lee, the 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner. Lee is having a particularly fantastic season this year, with an 8-3 record and a 2.34 ERA, striking out 89 batters while walking only six in 103 2/3 innings. When the deal is finalized, the Yankees will have the unbelievable pitching line of CC Sabathia, Lee, Andy Pettitte, Phil Hughes and AJ Burnett; they may look to trade Javier Vasquez, who has struggled early in this season. Elsewhere in the universe, Red Sox Nation was heard weeping hysterically.
