Queen Elizabeth II, the long-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom as well as the 15 Commonwealth realms (Canada, Australia, etc.), is visiting New York City this afternoon. She has been on a nine-day tour of Canada, and yesterday, she was stuck in the middle of a power outage in Toronto, affecting a state dinner in her honor. The 84-year-old royal will be visiting the United Nations General Assembly today—we hope there are back-up generators there, since NYC is feeling the heat, too.
Her visit takes place this afternoon: Between 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., she will be addressing the General Assembly (for the first time in over 50 years; she's expected to appeal for world unity and peace); meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon; visiting Ground Zero and laying a wreath there; and visiting the British Garden at Hanover Square (which was dedicated by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in 2005).
During her last visit to NYC in 1976, Mayor Abe Beame proclaimed her an honorary New Yorker. By the way, if you see her, you don't have to bow or curtsey—we're not British subjects anymore!
