Former WPIX news director Karen Scott has slapped the station with a $4.5 million lawsuit, claiming she and some of the station's biggest names were all victims of age discrimination. The 60-year-old claims she was let go because of her age, not because of bad ratings (which was WPIX's explanation). She also blames station manager Betty Ellen Berlamino for pushing former sports anchor Sal Marchiano out, and trying to get rid of Marvin Scott and Kaity Tong. Uh oh, Mr. G is getting up there...
In the suit filed yesterday, Scott says that 72-year-old reporter Marvin Scott's role was greatly reduced in 2009, and quotes Berlamino asking, "Why doesn't he just retire already?" Berlamino also allegedly loaded 59-year-old Kaity Tong (who so does not look her age in this press photo) with extra work in an attempt to wear her down. Sal Marchiano left the station in 2008, and said, "Reports about my retirement were—and are—inaccurate." He claims he was forced out.
The suit also points out that Karen Scott was replaced by William Carey, who is "approximately 10 years Ms. Scott's junior." Berlamino was fired last week by WPIX parent company Tribute, after president Jerry Kersting "decided it was time to make a change at WPIX."
