He may not be running for Comptroller or any public office in the immediate future, but former Governor Eliot Spitzer sounded like a man itching to get back in the political ring during an interview with NY1 yesterday. "I wish desperately that I were there fighting for the issues I care deeply about," he said.
Nevertheless, he remained coy about timetables for running: "Am I ruling it out? No. I've made it very clear that I'm not ruling it out, but also I'm not saying to anybody that I'm running in 2010, I'm running in 2012. This is not some predestined course by any stretch of the imagination," he said. Spitzer went on to criticize presumptive gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for his lack of clarity on policy again: "He has said very little about the substantive issues affecting the state...he now has a responsibility to be very forthright about what he is going to propose for the state."
Chatty Spitzer's charm offensive also yielded an interview on WNBC's "New York Nonstop," where he weighed in on former sparring partner Sen. Joe Bruno, who was sentenced to prison for wire and mail fraud. "What he stood for was antithetical to good governance...And so now, when people say, 'Why were you battling with him?' I think the answer's pretty clear. You always had that sense about him, that he was in this to get money in his pocket."
Spitzer's name has also come up as a possible candidate to replace Campbell Brown on CNN, as part of a new Crossfire-esque news program, which he denied to the Washington Examiner. Lest you worry about copping your next Spitzer-fix, he'll be coming to big screens soon: director Alex Gibney's untitled Eliot Spitzer documentary was bought by Magnolia Pictures.
