Officers Hoyoung Kim and Edwin Paulino, who were killed in a crash on the Bronx River Parkway, had been at a surprise party thrown for another cop before getting in their car with four other passengers. The party, thrown by Kenneth Ingram, was so loud it frustrated neighbors. One complained to the Daily News, saying, "The music and noise of the party didn't end until 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning. They were drinking. It kept me awake. My neighbor said he called the police, but nobody came." Apparently they were all next door.
Four days after the crash, postmortem blood alcohol tests on the two cops "have yet to be completed," but passenger Melina Ramirez told her brother that the officers had said they were fit to drive, saying, "Don't worry, we're cops. You can trust us." Previously, Ramirez told her sister Kim had admitted to being "a little bit tipsy."
After leaving the party, the car crashed into a guardrail on the Bronx River Parkway, pinning Kim and Paulino inside and leaving the four other passengers with critical injuries. A wake is being held for Kim today, and Paulino's wake will be held on Friday. The four other passengers remain hospitalized.
