Four teenagers were all arrested and charged with hate crime after allegedly beating and robbing a Mexican immigrant in Staten Island on Monday. Victim Rodulfo Olmedo was reportedly heading home one night in Port Richmond, Staten Island when he was jumped by four men who beat him with a baseball bat, wooden planks and a metal chain, and yelled racial slurs at him. WABC reports that 17-year-olds Rolston Hopson, Tyrone Goodman, and William Marcano, and another 15-year-old suspect, were arrested on charges of assault as a hate crime, gang assault, robbery and a hate crime of aggravated harassment.

According to the Staten Island Advance, the suspects were tracked down through a database of people stopped in a routine stop-and-frisk. The three were questioned at a stop-and-frisk in Port Richmond a few months ago, but were not arrested until the NYPD Hate Crimes division received a tip with the suspects' first names and descriptions. The attackers were also caught on film; the surveillance video from the Divine Wood Furniture store allegedly shows the four suspects carrying four-by-fours stalking Olmedo. The attack was not captured on film, but it shows the suspects running away with blood on their bats.

Olmedo told the press as he was released from the hospital, "It was brutal, savage. Not even an animal is attacked in this manner." He suffered a fractured skull, lacerations of his face and bleeding in his brain, and may require surgery in the future. Olmedo told Councilwoman Debi Rose that he is now "very fearful of where he lives and would like to move."
