With Bloomberg blaming this year's murder spike on the budget cuts, the NYPD is under pressure to keep the uptick from becoming an overall trend. NYPD heads held an emergency meeting this weekend to figure out ways to keep crime under control. Detectives Endowment Association President Michael Palladino told the Post, "It's a critical time. It has to be all hands on deck, because you could quickly revert back to the bad old days. It's a part of history that we don't want to revisit."

Their strategy is to flood problem areas with cops (including cops on horseback) to crack down on drug dealers and provide extra intelligence. They'll also be questioning all prisoners a lot harder in hopes of finding bigger criminals and discovering information on unsolved murders. Cops are especially concerned that warm weather will just add to the rise in crime. "The concern now is that as it gets warmer, more people are out on the street," one police source told the Daily News. "That's when you get more of the arguments that start over nothing and turn into something."

The citywide murder rate is 22.3% higher than it was at the same time last year, and shootings are 16.3% higher, with 293 people hit by bullets so far this year. Previous attempts to keep crime down by flooding areas with cops have been successful, but with budget cuts and a smaller police force, police are worried the plan won't work as well as it has previously.
