Tomorrow, 8th graders around New York were supposed to find out where they're going to be attending high school in the fall. But, due to a lawsuit from United Federation of Teachers and the N.A.A.C.P. over plans to close schools, a Manhattan Supreme Court judge ordered the Department of Education not to send out the letters, since the city's matching techniques didn't take into account 19 schools that are set to close. (CityRoom obtained a copy of the memo sent to principals this morning.)

Along with general anxiety amongst eighth graders, there is a risk of students not having enough time to find a high school if they don't have a match. According to the Daily News, last year about 9% of students didn't get matched in the first round. Mrs. Sciabarra said, "We do more than one iteration to make sure that we are optimizing the students' choices," but that still left almost 7,500 students unmatched. Students are typically sorted into high schools based on essays, grades, portfolios and their personal preference.
