Last Saturday, the Reverend Al Sharpton convened a meeting of Democratic leaders to discuss Governor Paterson's position. The group of mostly black leaders announced their support of the governor, who had just given up his gubernatorial campaign in the wake of his aide's abuse scandal, but now that there are more questions around Paterson's conduct, Sharpton is holding another meeting tonight.
Sharpton told the Post, "We have got to evaluate where we are in light of the new things that have come out since Saturday... [Some leaders' stances] may have shifted because of the new things that have come out." In the past five days, there have been more reports about Paterson's and his staff's contact with the aide's accuser as well as the ethics panel finding that Paterson violated the "public officer's law" for soliciting World Series tickets.
And that's adding up to dwindling support, according to a Daily News source who says, "There are a lot of things that people now see as indefensible. A lot of people think it's time to move on - not just for the state, but for David as well... There will likely be a vote and if people decide David should go, they will probably do a public announcement that they think he should step down." The meeting is tonight at Sylvia's at 8:30 p.m.
