Under huge pressure to win the game as the host nation, Team Canada was finally able to win its first hockey gold on Canadian ice. But the game between the United States and Canada couldn't be decided in just 60 minutes. After nearly eight minutes of 4-on-4 overtime play, Sidney Crosby scored the gold medal winning goal, beating US goalie Ryan Miller. Roberto Luongo, a Vancouver Canuck truly playing on home ice, had 34 saves in the winning effort. Canada's win comes seven days after an opening round loss to the United States and matches the Canadian women's hockey team's gold medal.
Team USA was unable to pull off the upset exactly 50 years to the day after upsetting Canada at the 1960 Winter Olympics and 30 years after defeating the USSR at the 1980 Lake Placid Games. The gold and silver by the Canada and the United States is a considerable improvement over their 2006 results in Turin where they finished 7th and 8th respectively.
In the 3rd period, Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils scored the tying game with only 35 seconds left in the game. Team Canada had a 2-0 lead after goals in the 1st and 2nd periods by Jonathan Toews and Corey Canperry. Ryan Kessler scored Team USA's first goal after 12 minutes in the 2nd period.
Canada was almost perfect in their biggest sports at the Vancouver games. Had the Sweedish women's curling team not won gold, Canada would have won gold in men's and women's hockey as well as men's and women's curling. Despite the women's curling team disappointment, Canada now has the record for the most gold medals in Winter Olympics history with 14 golds.
