Last night's win by the U.S. Olympic hockey team over the favored Canadian team might indeed be a "Minor Miracle on Ice", as the Post puts it. The NY Times said of the win, "With a hard-earned, thrilling victory Sunday, the United States surprised Canada, both the hockey team and the nation."
The Canadians outshot the Americans 45-23. The Daily News emphasized the Big Apple connection on its sports page—the New York Rangers' Chris Drury broke a 2-2 tie in the second period with a goal past defenseman Dan Boyle and goalie Martin Brodeur. You can see all the goals of the game at NBC Olympics.
Now the U.S. team has earned a bye to the quarterfinals; they'll meet the winner of the Switzerland-Belarus game on Wednesday. And American goalie Ryan Miller, who plays for the Buffalo Sabres, described game's buildup to the TImes: "It was actually the most polite trash talking I’ve ever heard in my life, because we’re in Canada. Most of them were just, ‘Hey, that’s Ryan Miller, the American goalie.’ And their friends would rally around and say, ‘Go Canada,’ or something like that."
