Another unofficial candidate is considering vying for Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's seat. Real estate billionaire and Daily News owner Mort Zuckerman is apparently thinking about running against the Paterson appointee. Though he's a registered Democrat, the 72-year-old reportedly thinks Gillibrand is weak, and is considering entering the race as a Republican or an independent candidate so he doesn't have to take part in a primary.
Individuals briefed on the possible run told the Times the possible run is still in its very preliminary stages. But the Boston Properties founder and tabloid owner is allegedly considering preliminary polling to see if he's popular enough with voters to launch a full scale campaign.
If he runs against Gillibrand (or possible candidate Harold Ford Jr. if he wins the Democratic primary), Zuckerman would likely be forced to follow the path of his friend, Mayor Bloomberg, who ceded much of his control of Bloomberg L.P. to employees when he ran for mayor, according to the paper. A spokesman for Zuckerman—who was born in Quebec but has become a naturalized American citizen—issued the following statement: "Mr. Zuckerman is not interested in running for public office."
