For serious, SNOWPOCALYPSE 2010 is here—we're currently under a blizzard warning! Schools are closed (city officials are worried that the afternoon conditions will be rough), airlines cancelled flights from area airports, the post office is collecting mail early and the United Nations is shut down! But New Yorkers are soldiering on: NY1 reports, "Working overtime on two 12-hour split shifts, about 2,100 Sanitation Department employees are using 365 salt spreaders and 2,000 plows. Over 100,000 tons of salt are at their disposal to take on the blanket of white."
Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty told WCBS 2 a little after 9 a.m., "Well around here on Staten Island and the highways around the city that I've been on so far are really in pretty good shape. It is slushy, I'm into some of the secondary streets now that we've had a little salting on and they're really slushy, it's building up." Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg recommended people rely on mass transit and the MTA says things are running on or close to schedule (but still check their website!).
We'll have more snow day pictures later. In the meantime, you can send yours to [email protected] or tag them "gothamist" on Flickr! And the Situation officially calls the snow storm... a situation.
