Like a monster awaking from slumber, the Mets finally threw their hats into the free agency market yesterday, offering contracts to OF Jason Bay and C Bengie Molina. The Mets organization seemed groggy earlier this off-season; GM Omar Minaya told one reporter “I don’t feel like I have to do something,” seemingly forgetting that the Mets went 70-92 with the second-highest payroll in baseball.
But on the last day of the winter meetings, they made some waves. The News reports that the club is believed to have made Bay, a power-hitting outfielder who hit 36 HR's playing for the Red Sox last season, a four-year, $65 million offer. They report that Molina was offered two years for roughly $12 million. Most likely it will take some time before any deals are finalized, but it's a good sign that the Mets are willing to spend money to improve the team. As superstar agent Scott Boras said, "The Mets have a network and they have an infrastructure there that is, I mean, it's a juggernaut economically."
These moves come on the heels of the Yankees re-signing Andy Pettitte, trading for OF Curtis Granderson, throwing a ticker tape parade, and saving people in car crashes.
