Just two months into his two-year prison sentence, former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress is eyeing a work furlough that could let him spend anywhere from one to seven nights per week at home, the Post reports.
Burress has requested to take part in a work release program that might let him spend time out of jail with his wife and children and negotiate with representatives from new teams in person, "rather than via prison phone calls or visits." After shooting himself in the leg at the Manhattan nightclub Latin Quarter last year, the NFLer pleaded down to a lesser weapons possession charge — potentially allowing him to take advantage of a loophole that lets "gun-possession convicts apply for furloughs providing they didn't possess the gun with intent to use."
But the Department of Corrections might turn down Burress' request to leave the Oneida Correctional Facility upstate, where according to the paper he appears to be "depressed and isolated." Last year, the agency only accepted 1,413 applications for work release from 31,598 applicants. Burress' attorney, Benjamin Brafman, says the player deserves to get a furlough — and his fame shouldn't stand in the way. "[M]y hope is that his celebrity status does not prevent him from getting a break that every other inmate with the same facts would be entitled to."
