Yesterday the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved designs for a transformed Pier 15 on the East River, in the South Street Seaport Historic District. The plan by architect Greg Pasquarelli of SHoP Architects will turn the the old shipping terminal into an urban oasis with a park on top, a maritime-education center and cafes below, as well as places for boats to dock. According to the Post, some preservationists objected to the modern design, but the Municipal Art Society approves, calling it "appropriate to the historic district." The project, expected to be completed in 2011, is part of a $148 million plan to create a two-mile river esplanade from the Whitehall ferry terminal north to East River Park. It's being almost entirely funded with moneys from the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.'s 9/11 federal rebuilding grants.
