Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in New York City yesterday, meeting different parts of her new downstate constituency: Business leaders and those who know gun violence first-hand.
At the ABNY breakfast, Politcker NY reports that one audience member though her "remarks were a bit too broad--she talked at one point about developing hybrid vehicles on the West Coast, and then about making sure Wall Street remains the financial engine for the country." She also told reporters she would vote for President Obama's stimulus package, in spite of voting against the previous bailouts, and that it was "disappointing" the State Senate would not vote on gay marriage this year.
In Brooklyn, Gillibrand, who frequently mentions her family of hunters and has a 100% rating from the NRA, met with parents and friends of Nyasia Pryear-Yard, a Nazareth Regional High School honors student who was killed last month at a party in Bedford-Stuyvesant. She expressed her condolences, "I care deeply. I am very upset about the horror and the tragedies that so many families experience," The Daily News said that Gillibrand promised to go after illegal gun traffickers, "I'm going to write the legislation and offer it in the Senate. I will be a fighter to make sure to keep those illegal guns off the street." Pryear-Yard's mother told the NY Times, “You have to give a person the opportunity to show their face, first. So I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt to do what she says she’s going to do. You just have to give a person a chance.”
Those chances are not lost upon Rep. Peter King. King, a Republican who is considering challenging her in 2010, said of Gillibrand's "evolution", "To change on so many fundamental issues in such a short period of time obviously raises doubts about her. But once she formulates her positions at least I'll know what the target is."
