Almost one month ago, Representative Anthony Weiner's brother Jason opened a Flatiron district outpost of Almond, his popular Hamptons restaurant. At the time, much was made of the restaurant/lounge's cursed location, which some say is still haunted by the ghosts of Borough Food & Wine, Jeffrey Chodorow’s Caviar & Banana, and Rocco DiSpirito's eponymous FAIL.
Although Chef Weiner and his business partner Eric Lemonides have reportedly enjoyed a month of steady business, it's still too soon to tell if the exorcism was a success. But the place does look pretty. The 170-seat space still features Borough's pool table in the back, while giving the rest of it an urban-rustic face lift with reclaimed wood from Vermont and New Hampshire. Up front there's a 20-seat brushed-metal bar, where specialty cocktails like the L’Amande (Grey Goose, almond oil and sherry) are served.
Weiner's seasonal menu currently features such items as an appetizer of Red Wine-Braised Short Ribs with Potato Bacon Galette and Horseradish ($12/$24), the signature entree of "Le Grand Macaroni and Cheese" with Prosciutto and Chopped Truffles ($18), and Sea Scallops and Braised Pork Shank with Polenta Ravioli and Caramelized Onion Jus ($23). And the temperature-controlled wine room doesn't just keep the vino safe, it also holds a wide variety of cheeses and meats that Weiner cures in-house. Yes, yes, Chef Weiner cures his own meat. 12 East 22nd Street, (212) 228-7557.
