2008_01_santanamets.jpgThe Mets have finally landed a much needed arm to lead their rotation. USA Today is reporting that the Minnesota Twins and the Mets have agreed to terms for pitcher Johan Santana. The two-time Cy Young winner comes to the Mets at a high cost, with the Mets delivering outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey to the Twins. Conditions of the deal include the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a contract (rumored at six or seven year contract extension in the area of $150 million) and that Santana passes a physical. According to USA Today Santana and the Mets have between 48-72 hours to reach an agreement.

Santana, a 28-year-old lefty, has a 93-44 record with a 3.22 ERA during his 8 year career. He was 15-13 last year with a 3.33 ERA and won the AL Cy Young in 2004 and 2006. Carlos Gomez spent 58 games with the Mets last year, batting .232 in 125 at bats. The 22-year-old is considered a five-tool player for his offensive and defensive skills. Humber was the first-round draft pick for the Mets in 2004 and is only 25, but is also 1 season removed from reconstructive elbow surgery. He spent most of the 2007 season in AAA New Orleans, going 11-9 with a 4.27 ERA. Mulvey played mostly in AA Binghamton and was 11-10 with a 3.32 ERA. The final piece of the trade, Guerra, turns 19 in April and struck out 66 batters in 89 2/3 innings with a 4.01 ERA for single A Port St. Lucie.

The addition of Santana would arguably give the Mets' pitching staff their first ace since Dwight Gooden.
