No snow? No mountains? No problem. This afternoon, New York City will play host to its first snowboard competition ever. The Union Square Street Sessions will feature 24 different male competitors as they compete for $30,000 in prize money. The list of riders (some as young as 14 and 15) scheduled to appear include New Jersey's Danny Kass, Marc Frank Montoya, and Eddie Wall. For the competition, snow and rails were brought in from Mountain Creek in New Jersey. One of the rails for the competitors is actually attached to a Jeep.
The festival area opens at 3 with athlete warmup and autograph sessions. The first round of competition is from 5:30 - 6:30 and the final round is from 7:30 - 8:30. Check out the full schedule for more details on the events.
Word to the wise if you head over tonight: dress warmly.
If today's events isn't enough to satisfy your riding spirit, there's also Saturday's Central Park Winter Jam. In addition to the events we mentioned yesterday, there's an amateur rail jam on the schedule. You can even see a video of last year's competition on the Parks & Recreation department website.
