CBS 2 World Exclusive
Monday night at 11 p.m. WCBS finally aired what they have been touting as a world exclusive interview with Golan Cipel. In the interview he denied claims that he was the lover of former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey and claimed was the victim of sexual harassment at the hand of the former governor.
Anchor Jim Rosenfield conducted the interview that included a visit to the Woodbridge condo, which was the scene of the incident that eventually lead to McGreevy’s downfall. Channel 2 must be desperate for November sweeps ratings, since they have made this a two parter forcing viewers who want to see the conclusion to tune in Wednesday at 11 p.m.
O. J. squeezed
The O. J. Simpson interview scheduled to air on Fox over two nights next week has been pulled along with its companion book, after much public pressure. Interestingly two of the biggest Fox News stars Geraldo Rivera and Bill O'Reilly spoke out against the book as well as Fox affiliates in smaller markets, mainly those owned by Pappas Telecasting and LIN TV, refused to air the program. The show would have aired in New York, since Fox owns the station here.
Today's Times talked to LIN executive vice president Scott Blumenthal who didn't feel it met with their company's values saying, "We just felt the program was inappropriate for our markets.” Pappas released a statement from Mike Angelos, Vice President of Corporate Communications, saying, "After all, broadcasters have a dual duty. We are not just businesspersons – we are public trustees, as well. As such, we must remember that the values and standards of the public we serve must be paramount in our programming decisions. Put another way, our duties as broadcasters mean putting the public first and profits second."
And, the press release from News Corporation, it’s Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch said: "I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project. We are sorry for any pain this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown-Simpson." Both the television special and book were produced by separate News Corp divisions. However, News Corp executives expect the tape of interview to wind up on the internet or for sale somewhere.
Score one for good taste and good sense for now.
On air after being fired
Joe Avellar, Dr. Max Gomez and Jane Hanson were all let go last Wednesday. However, it didn’t stop WNBC from airing Hanson’s last Jane’s New York this past Saturday evening. The final installment of the Hanson’s Emmy award winning series focused on local architecture.
