Last night, the Tampa Bay Lightning won The Stanley Cup, defeating the Calgary Flames 2-1 in the 7th game of the NHL Finals. Led by Ruslan Fedotenko's two goals, the 12 year-old Lightning franchise won its first championship and is the first team formed in the 90's to win the Cup. There is nothing quite like a 12 year-old team winning The Stanley Cup, a trophy awarded for 111 years making it the oldest trophy in sport. The Calgary Flames franchise is also relatively young, starting in 1980 when the Atlanta Flames moved north. The Flames were attempting to become the first Canadian team to win the Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.

The Flames had a chance to win Saturday at home, but they lost in double overtime, 3-2. Fedotenko's first goal of the game came was a power play goal at 13:31 in the first period, while his second goal came at even strength at 14:38 in the second period. The lone Flames goal was from Craig Conroy at 9:21, also in the second period. Lightning goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin had 16 saves and became the first Russian goalie to win Lord Stanley's Cup.

The Cup was also Lightning captain Dave Andreychuck's first after 22 seasons in the league. The Conn Smythe Trophy for the playoff MVP went to Brad Richards who had 26 points and 12 goals in the playoffs. Team owner Bill Davidson is also the owner of the Detroit Pistons who have a 1-0 lead against the Lakers in the NBA Finals.
