The Basics
Age and occupation. How long have you lived here, where did you come from, and where do you live now?
28, um, professional weblogger formerly with Gizmodo, now with Engadget. I've lived here for almost two and a half years. I was supposed to move here from San Francisco on the day of September 11th, 2001, but my flight was cancelled (obviously) and I didn't get out here for a few more weeks. Right now I live on Rivington Street, on the other side of Ludlow from Lockhart Steele. I've only bumped into him once in the neighborhood, which makes me think that he's only pretending to actually live here for the cred.
Threeweelin' Rojas
1. Please explain your big move and reflect a little on your time as the Gizmodo editor.
Well, Gizmodo was fun, but it was never meant to be more than a part-time job with part-time pay. I figured if I was gonna spend my Saturday nights at home blogging about gadgets I should probably either get paid a lot more to do it or be my own boss so I'd have no one to blame but myself when I'm broke. So now the future is Engadget.com.
2. Mobile blogging or "Moblogging" sounds interesting in theory but I wonder if it will create worthwhile "real-time street journalism" or just some crazy drunk dudes giving bar updates from a corner booth with blurry upskirt photos and people eating nachos. What do you think is gonna come of it?
Those both sound about right to me.
3. It's Oscar season. Please pick gadgets/gizmos/devices/whatever for the following categories.
Best Device in a Cutting-Edge Role: The Treo 600. But only because I can't shut up about it.
Best Supporting Device to a Mobile Phone: Definitely not those headsets that people like to wear.
Best Foreign Device: The Meowlingual, a little box that you can buy in Japan that will translate what your cat is saying into "human language."
Best Application for a Mobile Device or Phone (Original): Does the Paris Hilton video count as an application?
Best Song for a Ringtone (Adapted): Europe's "The Final Countdown" turned out pretty well as a ringtone.
Lifetime Achievement Award: If I was lazy I'd say the iPod, but that's too easy. Can anyone remember what life was like before TiVo?
Proust-Krucoff Questionnaire
9pm, Wednesday night - what are you doing?
Usually working. I have a lot of trouble getting any serious work done before 5pm.
Best celebrity sighting in New York, or personal experience with one if you're that type.
Princess Superstar once Friendstered me. No lie! The best part is that we exchanged messages and were supposed to go get a drink sometime but we were never managed to meet up. We'd make tentative plans and then one of us would break them for whatever reason, and after doing this over the course of about 6 weeks she sent me a final, dramatic Friendster message that she couldn't do this anymore and was really sorry but that she'd started seeing someone. Thus crushing my long dream of going on a date with a white female rapper.
Describe that low, low moment when you thought you just might have to leave NYC for good.
It's never gotten that far -- I don't even like to leave the island of Manhattan unless I have to.
Just after midnight on a Saturday - what are you doing?
As long as I'm not at home, I'm happy.
What's the most expensive thing in your wardrobe?
This black field jacket made by Obedient Sons.
Finish one of the four following sentences:
1) "Outside of his building, on E. 9th Street, Chip took money from Enid and..."
was promptly electrocuted.
Where do you summer?
San Francisco, where it's properly cold in August.
Who do you consider to be the greatest New Yorker of all-time?
Newland Archer.
What was your best dining experience in NYC?
I've been vegan for the past eight years, so my opinion on such things is both completely skewed and completely worthless.
Just how much do you really love New York?
When I was in college I got it into my head that I could never, ever live here, and now I can't imagine living anywhere else.
What happened the last time you went to L.A.?
Mainly spent a lot of time in a car, listening to tapes.
Medication: What and how much do you take?
I'll sometimes take Provigil, but it has almost no effect on me, so I don't know why I bother.
If you could change one thing about New York, what would it be?
The weather. The humidity totally ruins my hair.
The End of The World is finally happening. What are you going to do with your last 24 hours in NYC?
Probably not update my site.
